OFT refers Private Healthcare market to Competition Commission

The Office of Fair Trading has spent the last 9 months conducting a wide reaching review of the Private Healthcare market in the UK.  As a result of this review they have provisionally decided to refer the sector to the Competition Commission for the following reasons:

“There is a lack of easily comparable information available to patients”

“There are only a limited number of significant private healthcare providers and of larger health insurance providers at a national level.”

“A number of features of the private healthcare market combine to create significant barriers to new competitors”

This report comes at a time when many of the large private healthcare providers are squeezing fees for professionals and also restricting access to them for patients.
